Global Warming
The buildup of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere from human-made emissions is now considered one of the major contributors to global warming. In a study published in the July 1996 issue of Nature, researchers claimed proof that the effects of carbon dioxide buildup in the Earth's atmosphere were directly linked to increased global warming.
According to the study's coauthor, John F. B. Mitchell of the British government's Meteorological Office in Bracknell, England, “One temperature pattern was cooling in the upper atmosphere and warming in the lower altitudes, an apparent result of carbon dioxide buildup.” Agreeing with this assessment is Kevin Trenberth, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. Trenberth sees a relationship between humankind's activities, global warming, and extreme weather events around the world: “If Earth's atmosphere heats up, there will be a corresponding increase in evaporation of moisture from the planet's surface. If you increase evaporation, you will also increase the moisture content in the atmosphere, which increases precipitation…. The extra moisture gets caught up in precipitating systems and produces heavier rainfall and snowfall than would otherwise occur.”
To further complicate the problem of global warming, we have the escalating destruction of vegetation throughout the world—the cutting down of forests; the clearing of lands for buildings, highways, and strip mines; the loss of wetlands; and the removal of vegetation for agriculture. This destruction of Earth's forests and vegetation contributes to the release of more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, as well as other impurities that would be filtered out by healthy forests. Besides the loss of vegetation from land surfaces, there is also the killing off of nitrogen-holding algae from the world's surface waters due to pollution.
All of these factors influence the behavior of the Earth's surface waters. As the Earth experiences temperature change, no matter the cause, there will be inevitable alterations in the forms of life that can continue to survive. Whether human-induced or not, a temperature change in the Earth's atmosphere will alter the behavior of water and determine whether it nurtures or harms life.
